Abstract

The CoMotion MakerSpace is proposing to expand the range of prototyping equipment available in the space, as well as add a small group of CAD workstations for users to do design and layout as well as prep files for execution on various fabrication machines.

Category Justification

In its first 5 weeks of operation, the MakerSpace has already had over 180 users register and complete the required safety training and user agreement; hosted 6 workshops from sewing to 3D printing, and special student events such as UW Hackers Demo Night, Sakura-con costume making, and Women in UX (WiUX) social hour; and is supporting two design and fabrication-related courses (HCDE 498: Prototyping Techniques, and ME 495: Engineering Innovation in Medicine). Faculty and staff from SOA+AH+D, CBE, Drama, WNF, ME, DxArts, and MCHI+D have also made crucial contributions to the conception and/or implementation of the space. Students from majors as diverse as Business, Biology, and Computer Science are users of the space. A number of visitors from other educational institutions and spaces have visited the MakerSpace for inspiration, and it has also been of interest to many prospective and new student admits and faculty candidates.

Background

The CoMotion MakerSpace, launched in March 2015, is open to all UW students, staff, and faculty. The 4,000 square foot facility provides access to a wide variety of tools and equipment for prototyping, as well as studio space for individuals and teams to create and share projects. The MakerSpace is an open environment for innovation and creative expression, where people with different skills and common interests can collaborate and learn from each other. We are a flexible, multi-use space geared towards fostering a cross-disciplinary design and fabrication community, as well as providing entry-level workshops and events open to all, while connecting users to other campus shops and labs when more specialized capabilities are required.

Benefits to Students and the University

One of the primary goals of the MakerSpace is to lower the barriers for students to get hands-on experience with this wide variety of equipment, and increase access and exposure to those students who may not otherwise have it. CoMotion serves all departments at the UW, and through the MakerSpace aims to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration and peer learning. CoMotion's overarching mission is to be a collaborative hub, bringing together the broader community and further stimulating the collective impact that UW students and researchers are making in the world.

Installation Timeline

Equipment will be installed and available for use by the start of Fall Quarter 2015 (Sept. 30).

Resources Provided by Department

CoMotion has provided the initial equipment, as well as the space, facilities upgrades, staffing, and events programming for the space, and will continue to do so. After other renovations in Fluke Hall are completed in Oct. 2015, the MakerSpace will be expanding into 2,000 additional square feet of space around the perimeter that is currently WNF cubicle offices and shared conference/break room facilities with other 2nd floor tenants, at which time the perimeter layout will be redone and additional facilities renovations (including machine exhaust ducting and compressed air supply plumbing) will take place.

Access Restrictions (if any)

Currently the space is open for drop-in use from 2:30-8:30 pm, M-F; we aim to significantly extend these general access hours in the future. After completing the general orientation and safety training and signing the user agreement, students have full access to all of the equipment in the space during these hours. In order to use certain more expensive or powerful equipment (like the laser cutter) a user must be directly supervised by a staff member, or else signed off for independent use via an additional training workshop or via individualized review by a staff member.

There is no cost or user fee to individual students, staff, or faculty for use of the facility; we do plan to charge users for our costs related to consumables or stock materials that we provide for users' convenience (e.g. users would pay for 3D printing filament by weighing their part and scrap after printing and paying a few cents/gram, or could purchase plywood sheet to use on the laser cutter), but in most cases they can also choose to purchase these materials independently and bring them in for use in the space. The exception to this would be the ink cartridges for the DesignJet printer and possibly the solder paste for the ProtoPrint E (SMT stencil printer), which would not be practical for individual users to change out, so they would be required to pay for consumables in order to use them. We are currently working on setting up an internal cost center to facilitate this.

In order to provide a safe and inclusive environment, individual users may also have their access privileges suspended or revoked for violations of law, UW policy, or CoMotion MakerSpace policies.

In order to become tomorrow’s world-class leaders in engineering, UW students must learn new technologies before they achieve widespread adoption in industry. CoMotion provides access to new fabrication and design tools that allow students to prototype and test solutions with unparalleled speed and reduced costs. I and others on the College of Engineering Student Advisory Council have been working on raising support for spaces like this since last year at the department and college level, and the initial investment, space requirements, and ongoing support have required creates barriers to investment in these spaces. The hardest aspect has been to find space. The CoMotion space is quite large and has been remodeled, but it has a lot of underused space for new equipment. It needs more equipment to achieve its full potential. Its success has the potential to spur more investment in this area on campus, especially towards designating the space required to create more spaces like it. Every student I’ve talked too has been excited about having more of these spaces, and I’m very thankful the STF gave us the opportunity to present on this area earlier this year. I and others on the council hope to see this proposal funded.

Access to equipment capable of cheaply and rapidly producing production quality circuit boards (in the case, the suite of LPKF equipment, and OtherMill ) is a powerful accelerator for prototyping electronic devices. In the past, I've used DXART's LPKF system, and was impressed by how it enabled me to rapidly iterate on circuit design and produce limited production quantities of devices in an extremely short timeframes - reducing the 3-4 day delay for ordering PCBs to a mater of minutes. Having a system in the CoMotion makerspace would benefit many users of the space, such as engineering capstone groups, and allow for teaching innovative hands-on circuit design workshops.
