Descriptions

Abstract

The proposal will update the software for the computers in our Design Studio to match the current theatrical design industry standards. To accommodate the upgraded software, we will need to first update the computers by adding memory and solid state drives, which will allow student access to the most current software.

Software: Vectorworks 2015 Upgrade from Vectorworks 2012,
LightWright 5 upgrade from LightWright 4.

Hardware: 4 GB Memory Kit for 9 2010 iMacs,
Solid State drives for replacement of current hard drives in the 9 iMacs

Category Justification

The lab has been in use since Fall 2011 when the new design wing opened in Hutchinson Hall. This lab is available to all UW students, 40+ hours a week. At other times, the labs are used for a variety of student and faculty teaching, student research, and student workgroups.

Background

The lab was originally funded by STF in 2010 (2010-050-1 Thank You! ) when the School of Drama took over a section of the east side of Hutchinson Hall, which included a 40' x 30' room that was designated as a Design Collaboration Studio. That proposal included 10 iMacs, one of which has failed and was not replaced.

The Design Studio space is dedicated to design collaboration and is filled with drafting and computing stations, layout tables, critique centers, etc. This facility is available to the students involved in extra-curricular projects and performances. The students have a place to take what they learn in class and then work with professional equipment to bring ideas and concepts to light. It is often used by the students of the Undergraduate Theater Society (UTS), a campus RSO, in creating their production designs.

Benefits to Students and the University

It is vital to stress the importance of the combination of technology and space in this studio. Were we to create a room full of drawing tables, there would be minimal excitement. The same goes if we were to simply add another bank of computers. The beauty of this studio is that we are providing the two primary tools needed by designers within one space, and that provides a great deal of value and potential. With this combination and a few portable consumables such as paper and pencils, a student has direct access to the same resources used by the best designers in the world. All that is left then is to take what was taught in class and combine that with the imagination and personality of the student in order to create a work of art.

In order to see the potential here, we can look at an example of a production that would benefit from this equipment. The Cabaret Theatre in Hutchinson Hall is available for one BA show per quarter, where any student who is not involved with the Undergraduate Theater Society can apply to host a production. The winning applicant typically holds auditions for all positions and roles, including the design team. Potential designers could use the Drama Collaboration Studio to take initial ideas and get them into a professional-looking format for presentation. Once assigned the roles, the individual set, costume, lighting and sound designers could all use the computers and tables in the lab to design. During production meetings, each designer could use the provided departmental projector to project their designs upon a large screen, using the document camera for sketches and 3D models. The design team can then work together to mesh the various design components and improve the designs until ready for the stage.

This collaboration space has made a huge difference to those not working on productions but just taking design classes. Most of the design classes require a student to design something - a set, a costume, a lighting plan, etc. Few of these assignments require that a design be created on a computer in a design program. Because of this, coupled with the current lack of workstations combined with drafting tables, many students hand-draw their projects. While this meets the needs of the class, a professional designer would be expected to have a final product in a design program so that the design could be reviewed, manipulated, and changed. Having this equipment available to the students shifts the way that they learn to do their work from an archaic and quickly disappearing process to the way that is expected by employers today. We want to continue this support for them.

This equipment will not just help designers in the short term, but will also help prepare them for employment. Those working with the equipment in the studio should have little trouble creating professional-level portfolios of their work. They also should be able to demonstrate that they worked with others to integrate all design components into a cohesive show.

Departmental Endorsements

The School of Drama Design Faculty (Geoff Korf, Andy Smith, Tom Lynch, Deb Trout and Sarah Nash Gates) fully support the software and hardware upgrades to the Design Studio in Hutchinson Hall room 155.

Installation Timeline

If funded, the hardware will be purchased as soon as the funds become available and installed over the summer of 2015. The software will be purchased in the summer of 2015 and installed immediately after purchase.

Resources Provided by Department

If funded, the project will be implemented and maintained by the School of Drama Computer Support Specialist. Ongoing support will also be provided for software updates.

Access Restrictions (if any)

The Design Studio will be open to all UW Students, with priority given to students taking classes with the School of Drama or involved with theatre productions. The room will be open the same hours as Hutchinson Hall (typically daily 8:00 AM to 6:30 PM), with night and weekend access granted with permission of the School of Drama main office.

Student Endorsements

From Monica Faye Gonzalez, School of Drama '15: There is a desperate need to update the software in room 155. Students and faculty have access to the latest version of the software when they sign up for the education download. There are real differences between the versions, as an example: Vectorwork 2012 will change the design and plot points when imported into Vectorworks 2015 - this is the version that faculty and students have to download.

From Andy Swann, School of Drama '15: I work a lot with Adobe Audition and the CS6 version is not stable - upgrading to the latest version of Adobe Creative Cloud brings more stability and features. Using Adobe CC is industry standard and allows us to learn the software we will be asked to use when we graduate. And there are free updates to the iMac Operating System that cannot be installed because of the version of LightWright (4) is not supported on any OS higher than Lion (10.8) that is 3 versions old!

Product Information:
LIGHTWRIGHT™, written by Professional designer John McKernon, is the quintessential tool for tracking all aspects of selecting and arranging, numbering and comparing, assigning and footnoting lighting paperwork.
Lightwright™ has been used on over 90% of all Broadway shows over the last 10 years!
Lightwright was named as one of the "Products that Changed our World" by lighting Dimensions Magazine.

Justification

We are woefully behind in updating this software package. There are needed updates to the software which would make it more functional for the users. These updates would allow the LightWright software to integrate with Vectorworks so the designers have a more complete picture of their final theater design project.

Justification

Adobe is no longer supporting Creative Suite 6 with software updates. We need to update our software to keep current with what is supported and used in the industry. Currently we are running CS6 on a KeyServer on site in the School of Drama and from the KeyServer I can run reports that show that the Adobe CS6 is used by the students who use this lab.
