To enhance services for students within Student Publications, we propose the purchase of equipment to support the co-curricular activities offered by The Daily, The Daily Double Shot and an emerging need for video production. The equipment allows us to meet the growing needs of ever-increasing numbers of students, as well as to broaden the offerings under the Student Publications umbrella. The requested equipment includes cameras and equipment for The Daily Double Shot and The Daily.

Students come to us for unique and real-world experience. We have a rich history of providing training to a broad range of students, regardless of how much, or little, they know when they come through our doors.

We're submitting this as a Fast Track proposal so that the equipment can be put into the hands of our most experienced students, our graduating seniors. They have a clear vision of how it can help us move to the next level. Being able to get it now means they will get its operation and potential into our institutional memory.

Category Justification

Student Publications is place of collaboration. Between The Daily, The Daily Double Shot,, and now HUA Voice Radio, we expect students to work together to teach each other and learn how to produce high quality content under deadline, using a broad range of equipment and software.

Students want access to more complex and innovative storytelling skills. We want to accommodate them but are resource constrained. Additional equipment helps to ensure that students are not thwarted by the lack of personal equipment, but can gain valuable and enriching skills by having access to the department's equipment, and our senior, more-experienced student staff members.

Some of the equipment we're requesting is meant to supplement existing equipment that's heavily used and experiencing wear and tear. We're also asking for two new mirrorless cameras. These shoot credible video, but are more similar in shape, style and operation to a DSLR than our video camcorders. Having access to these cameras will allow more reporters to learn to shoot video to accompany their stories for the web, as well as digital.

Each quarter more students come to us, seeking unique and real-life experience that only occurs here. We anticipate working with more than 160 students this quarter, who will produce content seen and read by thousands of people every day. Additional equipment helps to ensure that students are not thwarted by the lack of personal equipment, but can gain valuable and enriching skills by having access to the department's equipment.

Benefits to Students and the University

There are two aspects to this proposal: One is to enhance opportunities to students interested in producing student media. The other is to enhance the quality of our products for our readers, viewers and listeners. When things work and there are adequate material resources, students' enthusiasm and collaboration drive innovation. What we produce — The Daily, The Daily Double Shot,, our digital publications and audio productions — all get better. Through the process, more students gain real-world experience that complements their education and qualifies them for better jobs in some aspect of media, if that's their goal.

We also serve as a portal to the University to alumni and others interested in the University and its community. The latest software and hardware creates new opportunity for students to tell stories as complete packages, with print, photo, audio and video components. Better tools will permit them to more fully explore their community, and to tell its stories in more relevant and compelling ways

Departmental Endorsements

This proposal is endorsed by the Director of Student Publications and by its student leadership, the Editor in Chief and the Advertising Manager, as well as the Executive Producer of The Daily Double Shot.

Installation Timeline

We would be able to procure the equipment within 2 weeks of notification of award. The camera equipment would be made available and put into use immediately. We're submitting this as a Fast Track proposal so that the equipment can be put into the hands of our most experienced students, our graduating seniors. They have a clear vision of how it can help us move to the next level. Being able to get it now means they will get its operation and potential into our institutional memory.

Resources Provided by Department

Student Publications provides the space, power, connectivity, insurance and maintenance for this equipment. It will secure training for the students, as needed, to successfully operate it to its fullest capability. We also have secure lockers in which to keep the equipment.

Access Restrictions (if any)

This equipment is available to students 24/7, while maintained in a secure location. The cameras and more expensive pieces will be insured against loss and breakage.

Student Endorsements

Dear STFC members:
As executive producer for the video content at The Daily I am responsible for coordinating my team of video reporters with the writers on the print side of the equation in order to create in-depth multimedia news pieces. This year we have advanced our format to full high definition and nearly doubled the size of our staff. These changes have been exciting yet require new equipment to facilitate a smooth transition.
We pride ourselves on being able to put faces behind the words of the print edition in order to better tell the story of The University of Washington. This new equipment will allow us to turn out more videos of a higher quality within a shorter time frame. With the help of the grant we will be able to take the video program at The Daily to a level of professionalism that it has never seen before. In parallel to the rise in emphasis of digital publication seen globally we hope to mold The Daily into a truly multi-media experience.

Thank You,

Simon Fox

Panasonic Mirrorless Camera

$1,432.07 2 $2,864.14

Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 4K Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body Only)
Not available at

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 4K Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera is a true hybrid camera designed for both professional photo and video use. It features a 16.05-megapixel Digital Live MOS sensor and a 4-CPU Venus Engine, capable of capturing high-resolution JPEG and RAW stills, as well as UHD 4K 3840x2160 30p/24p and cinematic DCI 4K 4096x2160 video at 24p. Like its predecessor, the GH4 features a weather-sealed magnesium alloy body, while offering increased resolution on both the OLED monitor and electronic viewfinder. It also features built-in Wi-Fi with NFC technology, in-camera creative controls, and a high-speed 49-point autofocus in both photo and video mode.

The GH4 delivers video quality surpassing many professional video cameras. Video can be recorded in a variety of formats, from efficient AVCHD and AVCHD Progressive, to 200 Mbps All-Intra and 100 Mbps IPB MOV and MP4 formats. And because the GH4 is a global camera, the system frequency can be switched between 59.94 Hz (23.98 Hz) and 50 Hz, yielding a variety of recording options including 23.98p, 25p, 29.97p, 50p, and 59.94p. The system can also be switched to 24 Hz to capture true 24p in HD and 4K resolutions.

These cameras shoot quality video, and yet are as simple to use as a DSLR camera, putting it within the comfort range of more students. We want more reporters and photographers to begin shooting video. These are less expensive than our other video cameras and yet because they work with an assortment of lenses, can be more versatile in the field.

-Nathan Taft, Senior, Political Science: International Security

ntaft — January 19, 2015 @ 4:44 p.m.

Improving The Daily's video capability is one of the best ways to support an amazing, award-winning publication.

dtmd — January 19, 2015 @ 4:48 p.m.

The Daily's biggest strength is that it simultaneously provides a real, professional work environment for it's staff while reliably covering the UW community as it relates to the world with very high standards. Providing this equipment will help it keep up with changes in the world around it while maintaining high standards of journalism.

-Arunabh Satpathy, English (Creative Writing)

arunab10 — January 19, 2015 @ 6:27 p.m.

The Daily's video department is only going to get larger and larger. With this new equipment, we will be able to train students with equipment that is relevant to current and future industry standards.

Student127 — January 20, 2015 @ 5:36 p.m.

The expansion of The Daily's video department warrants the acquisition of new high quality equipment to match the quality of content it seeks to release. Waiting too long to upgrade and gather more resources may stunt an extremely productive program.

woog — January 20, 2015 @ 7 p.m.

Video features at The Daily and Double Shot are growing, mirroring the countless and ever-changing production possibilities on the professional level. For students to explore these possibilities and create content efficiently, we need the latest equipment.

ateodoro — January 20, 2015 @ 7:27 p.m.

High quality video equipment will ultimately lead to high quality videos. As a student and staff member for The Daily/Double Shot, being able to use this equipment now will help me better prepare for future journalism/production jobs. The Daily is known for its outstanding content, and better equipment can only help it grow and improve.

okf11 — January 21, 2015 @ 10:10 a.m.

In todays media environment multimedia is critical to the relevance of any particular outlet. For the daily we have been building our program from the ground up since all of our equipment was stolen two and a half years ago. This batch of equipment will allow still photographers to make the transition to video much easier and vice-versa. Getting students hands-on experience with mirror-less cameras and other professional grade equipment will not only boost the quality of our videos but it will also give them the know-how to enter into a professional environment after graduation more easily.

foxs3 — January 21, 2015 @ 11:01 a.m.

The Double Shot provides opportunities for students to try new things. However, as technology continues to improve the student journalists need to be exposed to these new devices to give them an edge in the workplace. Allowing this grant to pass directly supports students in their future after graduation.

Levi_Logstrom — January 21, 2015 @ 2 p.m.

There is truly no way of expressing how much this new state of the arc equipment will propel the Double Shot and The Daily both. For one, if this proposal is granted then the Double Shot and Daily will be among one of the most advanced video hubs on campus, this will mean that membership will more than likely go way up. In addition the new technology will only further strengthen the production skills of our team, and enable us to pump out professional quality videos that could be ready for TV air at any moment! I am personally very excited and hope that this proposal can be awarded so that the Double Shot and The Daily may further their professional endeavors.
