Abstract

The UW School of Pharmacy has over 300 students enrolled in the program at any given time. Pharmacy students spend considerable time in the student lounge where they have easy access to the computers there. However, the printer in the pharmacy student lounge is no longer able to adequately meet the printing demands placed on it, and the students have asked that it be replaced. After researching the different products available, it was decided that the Xerox WorkCentre Pro 421Pi multifunction printer would be the best fit for our needs. This machine offers all the features we require: high printing capacity, copying capabilities, duplex copy and print option, and network connectivity. It has been the wish of the pharmacy students for some time now that we have a printer capable of keeping up with our new computers. Funding the purchase of a Xerox WorkCentre Pro 421Pi would be greatly appreciated and we look forward to your decision.

Background

The University of Washington is home to one of the top pharmacy schools in the nation. Over 300 students are enrolled in the program at any given time, and access to state-of-the-art technology is absolutely essential to remain competitive in the rapidly advancing field of health care. The tech fee committee acknowledged this in 2002 when it funded new computers for the student lounge. We are asking that the committee now take the next step. Currently, there is only one printer in the student lounge to support the activities of 300+ students. This printer is several years old and breaks down on a regular basis. It also does not offer the copying capability pharmacy students need.

Benefits

Easy access to technology is essential for UW pharmacy students to stay up-to-date with the latest research and technology and remain competitive in a rapidly advancing field. A new printer/copier will provide more reliable access to printing in the pharmacy student lounge. This improved access will allow students to print and copy the materials they need such as class handouts, lab worksheets, journal articles, etc. Pharmacy student organizations will also have access to these services which will provide them with an affordable way to conduct their business.

Student Access

The printer/copier will be located in the pharmacy student lounge. All pharmacy students have access to the lounge during the normal business hours of the Magnuson Health Sciences Center.

Available Resources

The student lounge is already equipped with four computers and ethernet access. We do not anticipate needing any other resources.

Installation Timeline

We hope to purchase the printer as soon as the funds are available.

Departmental Endorsement

This application was proposed at a meeting of pharmacy student representatives and administrators from the Department of Pharmacy. It was supported by all present, including the Dean of Pharmacy and an Associate Dean.

Student Endorsement

This proposal is the result survey responses from School of Pharmacy students. The entire pharmacy student body was asked to give their opinion on what material improvements they thought should be made for the benefit of pharmacy students as a whole. The responses showed an overwhelming majority thought that a printer/copier for the pharmacy student lounge would be the most useful improvement.
